The Anatomy of a YouTube Thumbnail with 10%+ Click-Through Rate
## Your Thumbnail is Your Billboard

You can spend 40 hours shooting and editing a masterclass video, but if nobody clicks your thumbnail, the YouTube algorithm will stop recommending your video within 6 hours.

### 1. The 3-Word Rule
Never repeat your video title on the thumbnail. The title is indexed for search; the thumbnail provides the **emotional question or intrigue**. Keep thumbnail text under 3 to 4 words at maximum.

### 2. Facial Lighting & Rim Lights
Human brains are wired to notice human faces and emotional expressions. We isolate the speaker's face, adjust skin warmth, and paint vibrant cyan or violet rim lights behind the head to separate the subject from dark YouTube dark-mode backgrounds.

### 3. Testing at 120 Pixels
When YouTube recommends your video on mobile home feeds or in the sidebar, the preview image is barely 120 pixels wide. If your hook doesn't pop at that scale, high CTR is statistically impossible.
